«Зелёная миля»
(англ. The Green Mile) — культовая мистическая драма по одноимённому роману Стивена Кинга. Премьера состоялась 10 декабря 1999 года. Имеет 4 номинации на «Оскар», 3 премии «Сатурн», ещё 10 наград и 23 номинации. Режиссёр — Фрэнк Дарабонт.
Сюжет
История в фильме излагается как рассказ обитателя дома престарелых «Джорджия Пайнз» Пола Эджкомба (Том Хэнкс). Он рассказывает своей приятельнице Элейн Коннелли (Ева Брент) о работе в тюрьме.
В 1935 году Пол работает надзирателем в федеральной тюрьме «Холодная гора» (штат Луизиана) — в блоке «Е», где содержатся заключённые, ожидающие казни на электрическом стуле. Линолеум в блоке, по которому осуждённые отправляются в последний путь, окрашен в зелёный цвет, а сам путь длится ровно одну милю, отсюда и его прозвище — «Зелёная миля».
Среди прочих надзирателей в блоке «Е» с недавнего времени работает Перси Уэтмор (Даг Хатчисон) — трусливый, подлый и злобный молодой человек. Он издевается над заключёнными и уверен в своей вседозволенности, поскольку является племянником жены губернатора штата Луизиана. Устав от бесконечных выходок Перси, Эджкомб и его коллеги заключают с Уэтмором договор — ему будет разрешено руководить казнью заключённого, после чего он напишет заявление о переводе в другое учреждение.
В тюрьму поступает огромный чернокожий человек Джон Коффи (Майкл Кларк Дункан), приговорённый к смерти за изнасилование и убийство двух девочек. Вскоре после него в тюрьму поступает разбойник и убийца Билл Уортон по кличке «Дикий Билл» (Сэм Рокуэлл). В камере смертников находится и француз Эдуард Делакруа (Майкл Джетер), который приручает появившегося в тюрьме сообразительного мышонка мистера Джинглса, и учит его разным фокусам.
Тем временем оказывается, что Джон Коффи наделён сверхъестественными способностями — с помощью наложения рук он исцелил Эджкомба от инфекции мочевого пузыря, а затем вернул к жизни мышонка, которого в отместку Делакруа растоптал Перси. Эджкомб начинает сомневаться в виновности Коффи.
Во время казни Делакруа Перси допускает намеренную ошибку, тем самым обрекая Делакруа на ужасную смерть. Охранники блока «Е» тем временем решаются тайно отвезти Джона Коффи в дом начальника тюрьмы, чья жена больна неоперабельной опухолью мозга. Всё удается блестяще, и Коффи исцеляет женщину, однако болезнь слишком сильная, и обратно в тюрьму Коффи привозят совершенно больного. Когда к его камере подходит Перси, Коффи хватает его и передаёт сидящую внутри его болезнь. Перси сходит с ума и убивает из револьвера Дикого Билла. Во время разговора с Эджкомбом Коффи показывает ему с помощью своих способностей, что убийцей и насильником на самом деле был Дикий Билл. Однако Коффи просит не препятствовать казни, так как он очень устал от ужасов окружающей его жизни.
Вскоре после казни вся команда блока «Е» увольняется и переводится в тюрьму для несовершеннолетних.
В финале зритель вновь видит дом престарелых, где постаревший герой рассказывает, что Джон Коффи, исцелив его, подарил ему долгую жизнь, и на момент рассказа Полу уже 108 лет. В подтверждение своей истории Пол ведёт Элейн в небольшой сарай неподалёку от дома престарелых, где живёт по сей день изрядно постаревший мышонок казнённого Делакруа — мистер Джинглс, которому главный герой носит еду.
